Technical Seminar: Application of BIM in DfMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly)

Date, time & venue

2019-02-15;18:30-20:00;HKIE Seminar room

Organised by HKIE-CAD, EVD and AMC,

Supported by HKICBIM

Date, Time Venue

15 February 2019 (Friday), 6:30-8:00 pm, HKIE seminar room

Programme Highlight

Design and construction of complex architecture projects faces frequent changes. Sharing and coordination of information, human errors and corrections lead to production inefficiency. In this seminar, the speaker will share his team's experience in supporting design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) in the facade industry. It is proven that DfMA provides a total solution to centralize information, minimize manual works, integrating the power of automation. The speaker will also share the engineering tools for clustering, regression and optimization can be used to facilitate the realization of complex building facades. He will use examples from familiar buildings where these tools have been adopted.

Powerpoint and presentation in English

Mr. Ajay Joneja

Immediately after receiving his PhD from Purdue University, Ajay Joneja joined HKUST in 1993 as one of the first group of faculty members in the IE department (now IEDA). His research has primarily focused on the confluence and integration of Design and Manufacturing. In the 1990s, he developed computational tools to optimize subtractive processes like milling, as well as additive, or 3D printing processes. In the 2000s, he worked on shape design, particularly constrained shape modification – which was motivated by footwear design. In the last eight years, he has worked mostly on computational tools for architectural design. He is the co-founder of Sane Form Ltd, a company that specializes on advance BIM technology such as DfMA for architecture.

Registration & Enquiries

The seminar is free of charge with maximum of participants of 80.  For registration, please complete the online enrollment form in CAD website ( on/before 13 February 2019.  Successful applicants will be notified before the event.  For enquiries, please contact Mr. Benjamin Lam at .  Attendance certificate will be awarded after the seminar.
