The HKIE Environmental Division Annual Forum "Developing Intelligent Resource Preservation Strategies for Hong Kong: Challenges for Innovation and Sustainability”

Date, time & venue

2018-04-27;9:00am - 5:00pm;Crowne Plaza Hong Kong Kowloon East, 3 Tong Tak Street, Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong

Background

Global adverse environmental burden and drastic depletion of resources induced by intensive consumption, heavy pollution and climate changes have led to the identification of waste as a valuable resource that requires responsible and sustainable solutions for managing and recovering. Accordingly, the holistic concepts of “zero waste”, “circular economy”, “cradle-to-cradle”, “closed loops” and ‘’resource recovery’’ have emerged worldwide over the last decade as part of a cultural shift and a new way of thinking about the age-old problem of waste and the economic obsession with endless growth and consumption.

In Hong Kong, the Government, in collaboration with key stakeholders, is actively promoting the development of waste reduction and recovery with various initiatives and major environmental programmes and infrastructure investments, in particular, the waste-to-energy programme, and public consultation on the transfer of advanced technologies for waste recycling and recovery strategic plans. Regulations, incentives and funding supports with continuous professional skills improvement schemes are also being establishing to stimulate the development of resource preservation in Hong Kong against resource-intensive economy.

It is therefore timely for HKIE Environmental Division to promote the discussion on the intelligent resource preservation strategies in Hong Kong by bringing together various stakeholders. The main objective is to inspire, empower, and inform professional bodies, public and all stakeholders on emerging innovative waves in resource preservation intelligence, and to mobilize practical knowledge and know-how for dealing with cross-cutting and challenging issues.
