1.    BACKGROUND

1.1  This Award is established in memory of the late Ir Peter H K Chan, a past Chairman of HKIE’s Environmental Division.

2.    OBJECTIVE

2.1  The primary objective of the Award is to recognize engineers’ efforts in any environmental research and projects in which environmental pollution control and sustainable development, such as reduction of greenhouse gas emission, use of renewable energy, minimization of energy consumption in buildings, carbon audit and management, waste recovery and recycling, solid waste management, water and wastewater treatment, and environmental impact assessment are fully considered and properly addressed. This Award is intended to encourage widespread emergence of environmentally sound projects.

3.    RULES

3.1  This Award is open to all classes of HKIE member.

3.2  Each author can only submit one entry. At least one of co-authors must be HKIE member.

3.3  Authors should obtain approval from relevant parties relating to any information and/or data to be published in their papers.

3.4  Members of the Judging Panel are not eligible to submit any paper either as sole author or as co-author.

3.5  The papers should not have been previously published or released in any format.

4.    PAPER

4.1  The Award recognizes excellence in engineering projects and research papers for solving environmental problems with demonstrated sound environmental performance or for proposing conceptual/innovative ideas. The contents of the paper should include, but are not limited to:

• environmental issue
• Environmental considerations given
• Approach to avoid, minimize and/or mitigate environmental impacts
• Environmental technologies or methodologies applied or proposed
• Environmental performance and its engineering implication

4.2  Submitted papers will be assessed taking account of the following aspects:

• Innovation
• Environmental performance
• Contribution to sustainable development
• Comprehensiveness and coverage
• Logical arguments
• Presentation and clarity (oral presentations are expected for short listed submissions

5.    JUDGING PANEL

6. PRIZE

6.1  There will be one Champion Prize and one First Runner-up Prize for engineering project or research paper.

6.2  The Champion Prize will be HK$10,000 in cash plus an Award Certificate.

6.3  The First Runner-up Prize will be HK$5,000 in cash plus an Award Certificate.

6.4  Other than these two prizes, a “Certificate of Merit” will be presented to the outstanding papers.

7.    BEST PAPER

7.1  The winning papers may be recommended for publication in the Hong Kong Engineer or HKIE Transactions.

7.2  The Division will have the copyright to post the paper on the Division web-site or other media for non-profit making purposes.

8.    SUBMISSION

8.1  The submission shall include:

Electronic submission of the manuscript with a separate information sheet detailing the paper title, author’s full name, organization, postal address, contact telephone number and email address to Ir. Thomas Chan at thomas.chan@mottmac.com,  followed by a hard copy to:

Ir. Thomas Chan, Mott MacDonald Hong Kong Ltd., 20/F AIA Kowloon Tower, Landmark East, 100 How Ming Street, Kwun Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong on/before 24 February 2017.

8.2  The manuscript should be prepared according to the format of the HKIE transactions.

8.3  Results of the Award will be announced in early April 2017. The presentation of prizes will be held in AGM of HKIE Environmental Division in April/May 2017, and the winners will be arranged to give seminars of their awarded papers to HKIE in May/June 2017.
