Technical Talk on the HK’s Largest Solar Power System at Lamma Power Station

Date, time & venue

2011-06-15;6:30pm to 8:00pm;HKIE Seminar Room

Programme Highlights

In support of the Government’s Blue Sky Campaign for improving local air quality, the Hongkong Electric Co Ltd has recently commissioned the HK’s largest solar photovoltaic (PV) system comprising 5,500 amorphous thin-film photovoltaic (TFPV) modules, each rated at 100W peak output installed on the rooftops of the Main Station Building at Lamma Power Station. The system will generate green electricity of about 620,000 kWh per year, offsetting 520 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission.

In this seminar, the speaker will share the HEC’s experience from site selection, system design issues, challenges and initial performance evaluation on the utility scale TFPV system in Hong Kong.

Speaker

Ir C.K. Lau, Chief Electrical Engineer, Projects Division, The Hongkong Electric Co. Ltd.

Technical Seminar on HK’s Largest Solar Power System at Lamma Power Station

By Ms CHAN Ning

In support of the Action Blue Sky Campaign, launched by the HKSAR Government in 2006, for improving local air quality, the Hongkong Electric Co., Ltd (HK Electric) has recently commissioned the HK’s largest solar photovoltaic (PV) system at Lamma Power Station. To disseminate sustainable development and application of renewable energy, the captioned seminar organized by the Environmental Division was held at the HKIE Headquarters on 15 June 2011.

Ir C K Lau, Chief Electrical Engineer, Project Division, HK Electric shared his distinguished experience with the audiences on PV technology, site selection, system design, challenges during project implementation, and the initial performance evaluation on the utility scale PV system in HK.

Comprising 5,500 amorphous thin-film photovoltaic (TFPV) modules, each rated at 100W peak output installed on the rooftops of the Main Station Building at Lamma Power Station, the completed 550kW solar power system is now the largest solar power system in Hong Kong and is also the first large scale project applying amorphous silicon thin-film [a-si] technology.

Ir Lau pointed out that the energy payback time for a-si Thin Film PV is about 1.5 years while that for crystalline silicon [c-si] module is about 2.5 years. Thin film PV is more environmentally friendly in production, and the ability to maintain power output level at high temperature is better than crystalline PV module and is more suitable for sub-tropical environment like HK.

He further interpreted that compari
