Seminar on Innovative Water Conditioning Technologies

Date, time & venue

2010-06-09;6:30pm - 7:30pm;HKIE

(Jointly organized with SSC, AMC and YMC)

Programme Highlights
Traditional water treatment for heat exchanger uses chemicals for scale and corrosion inhibition, bacteria killing, algae and biofilm growth control. However these problems cannot be eliminated completely due to chemical inadequacy or other constraints.  As the cost of energy, labour and material keeps rising and the demand for environmental friendliness is increasing, non-chemical and cleaner water treatment technology is getting its popularity.  This seminar introduces innovative Electromagnetic Induction Technologies (EMIT) which effectively reduces mineral scale and biofilm, controls the growth of bacteria and algae. EMIT also reduces energy, water, chemical and material consumption. Case studies and comparison of technologies will be shared.

Speaker
Mr. Kalson Leung, Technical Director of PowerTech IPC Co., Ltd.

Registration & Enquiries
Pre-registration is not required.  The number of participants is limited to 80 (first-come-first-served). Attendance certificate will be available.  For enquiries, please contact Ir Anthony Kwan at Tel: 9356 4628.

Seminar on Innovative Water Conditioning Technologies

By Ir Emily Hung

On 9 June 2010, the HKIE Environmental Division, Safety Specialist Committee, Associate Members Committee and Young Members Committee jointly organised a seminar on innovative water conditioning technology. Mr Kalson Leung, technical director of PowerTech IPC Co., Ltd, was invited to introduce the latest development of Electromagnetic Induction Technologies (EMIT).

Traditional water treatment for heat exchangers uses chemicals, UV light, ozone and copper and silver ionzer for scale and corrosion inhibition, bacteria killing, algae and biofilm growth control. These water treatment technologies are easy to use. However, there are many constraints in using these treatments.  They may cause high operation & maintenance cost, equipment failure and water pollution.

To solve these problems, the speaker introduced the innovative EMIT, which effectively reduces mineral scale and biofilm, controls the growth of bacteria and algae. The working principle of these technologies is to induce the electromagnetic water treatment signal into water by means of electromagnetic induction. The signal prevents the formation of scale as well as the dissolution of existing scale.

Since no mineral scale is formed on surfaces of heat exchangers, energy loss from heating and cooling can be minimized. The use of these advanced technologies also reduces CO2 emission and potential water quality impacts to the environment. On the other hand, the operation of the equipment under a scale free environment increases energy efficiency of the equipment, reduces the operation and maintenance cost and ultimately extends the equipment life.
