Programme Highlights
CLP is celebrating 120
years! We started with one unit in Hong Kong 12 decades ago, and now power
millions of homes and businesses throughout Asia Pacific. We play a leading
role in renewable energy, and continuously strive to support our customers in
achieving their sustainability goals. In our upcoming webinar, we are
going to discuss two key ways that CLP can help in achieving sustainability
targets on how the circular economy can reduce waste, and create value for
businesses through SEC ASPIRE.
The seminar will present
the initiative of the circular economy which is a body of knowledge that
supports the closing of material and energy loops within the economy. The goal
is to retain material and energy flows at their highest possible value and
utility for as long as possible, while providing for a safe and regenerative
end of life disposal.
Hong Kong has two major
problems – waste and carbon emissions. By 2020, not only was the region’s
landfills forecast to overflow, but carbon emissions were expected to peak with
more electricity generation than natural gases in available fuel mix[1]. At the same time,
the Hong Kong SAR Government has introduced policy and legislation to mitigate
these issues, such as the recently passed bill to introduce a municipal solid
waste charging scheme, in addition to reducing carbon emissions by 65-70% by
2030. The Government is also a signatory of the Paris Climate Agreement, and
has committed to reaching carbon neutrality with 2050.
Transitioning from a linear
economy to a circular economy can both assist in reducing waste and carbon
emissions. Not only is less waste generated, but there are embodied carbon
savings by ensuring resources are not thrown away or rot in landfill. CLP and
ASPIRE will also share how through a circular economy, Scope 3 emissions can be
saved and measured.
This
disruptive concept of the circular economy is one way that businesses and
consumers can change their behaviours and practices to reduce waste impact, and
also carbon emissions.
