Highlights
Accommodating
7 million population in 1,100 km2 area, Hong Kong is a truly densely
populated city where keeping traffic noise at bay is a challenge in planning
new housing development. Due to high demands of housing development and lack of
suitable sites, more and more sites housing blocks are put next to heavily
trafficked road. As results, traditional
noise mitigation measures, e.g. building setback, noise barrier, internal
layout design, etc. are found insufficient in meeting L10(1hr) 70
dB(A, )the local noise planning criteria.
Environmental
Protection Department is well aware of the need of innovative means to mitigate
road traffic noise impacts. Through collaborations in research &
development as well as project development, various kinds of Innovative Noise Mitigation
Designs (INMDs), including acoustic windows, have been studied, tested, developed
and applied in public and private residential development in the past few years.
These INMDs were demonstrated effective in reducing the noise transmitted from
outdoor to indoor environment while maintaining the required ventilation inside
the premises. Tests conducted for acoustic windows show their effectiveness of
reducing 6-8 dB(A), the in-out noise level difference under conventional
setting and acoustic setting.
INMDs have
been adopted in engineering feasibility studies of new town developments as
early as 2010s. They were also adopted in Schedule 3 Environmental Impact
Assessment studies (e.g. Housing Sites in Yuen Long South, Hung Shui Kiu New
Development Area, Comprehensive Residential and Commercial Development atop Siu
Ho Wan Depot, etc.) to mitigate road traffic noise problem for strategic planning
in order to expedite the residential development potential in proximity to
major roads.
A 4D VR tool
has been developed for the acoustic window to enable project managers,
architects, designers, practitioners, etc. to visualize the potential results
of adopting acoustic window so as to facilitate their adoption in building
designs. A demonstration of the 4D VR tool will be conducted at the seminar to
enable participants to have visual and audio experience of noise reduction
effectiveness of acoustic window.
