Chemical waste in Hong Kong is
disposed of either on-site where the chemical waste is generated, at the
landfill site or at other off-site disposal facilities including the Chemical
Waste Treatment Centre (CWTC). All these facilities must be licensed by this
department.
The Chemical Waste Treatment
Facilities (CWTF) is the only chemical waste treatment facility in Hong Kong,
and considered as one of the most comprehensive and sophisticated hazardous
waste treatment facilities in Asia. CWTF provides a cradle-to-grave solution
for all land-based chemicals, clinical, and mercury-contained waste generated
in Hong Kong, as well as collection and treatment services for marine
pollutants generated from ocean-going vessels.
The CWTC has been in operation
since 1993. The design capacity of the CWTC is: 100,000 tonnes/ year of
chemical waste, 3,696 tonnes/ year of clinical waste and mercury waste
equivalent to 3.5 million lamps/ year.
The chemical waste treatment
processes include oil/ water separation, physical/ chemical treatment,
incineration and stabilisation. The CWTC includes several Ancillary Systems
designed to support the treatment processes, these are the Waste Container
Handling, Storage Tank Farm, Laboratory and Computer System.
