Programme Highlights:-

In February 2014, the Environment Bureau unveiled “A Food Waste & Yard Waste Plan for Hong Kong 2014-2022” and sets out four main strategies as the backbone to tackle the food waste challenge, namely reduction at source, reuse and donation, recyclable collection, and turning food waste into energy.  One of the main strategy is to develop a network of Organic Resources Recovery Centres, adopt advanced technology to recycle food waste into renewable energy and useful resources.  This seminar will give an overview on the food waste management in Hong Kong, as well as the latest development of the advanced food waste treatment facilities.

Speaker:-

Dr. Samuel H.K. Chui is an Environmental Engineer (Member of HKIE) with over 30 years of experience in the Field of Environmental Engineering.  He has been responsible for sewerage infrastructure planning, setting effluent standards for effluent discharges, enforcement of environmental legislation, supervising the Shing Mun River Bioremediation Works, the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme, the Organic Resources Recovery Centre and the Integrated Waste Management Facilities.  Dr. Chui is an expert in wastewater treatment with 29 international journal papers published, 1400 citations, 5 International Awards as well as the Best Ph.D Thesis Award of the University of Hong Kong in 1993 – 1995.  Since 2004, Dr. Chui has been a part-time lecturer of the Master of Science course in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) teaching “Wastewater Treatment and Reuse”.  He is now an Assistant Director of Environmental Protection Department of the HKSAR Government, in charge of the waste-to-energy strategy and facilities developments.
