Technical Seminar: Land reformation and environmental upgrading in the World Expo in Shanghai

Date, time & venue

2017-03-25;09:30-12:00nn;HKIE-Board Room, HKIE HQ

Jointly organized by EVD, CAD & AMC

Program Highlight

After a series of debates and short-listing, in 2002 Shanghai successfully obtained the approval from the International Exhibitions Bureau to host the World Expo event to be held in 2010 in Shanghai. Making use of the opportunity associated with the World Expo development, the Municipal government of Shanghai decided to restructure and upgrade the entire Shanghai city to be an international metropolis in particular with focus on urban, culture, economic and environmental quality.

The site for the World Expo in Shanghai is considered to be unique and made a number of world records. It located in one of the most congested population zone within a mega city. It is less than 3.5 km away from the city centre.

Besides, the site was originally occupied by a number of industrial premises including shipyard, workshop for heavy industries, chemical plants, power stations, cargo bays and warehouses. These facilities were required to be decommissioned and relocated; contaminated areas to be cleansing up, before the placing-in and construction of the new Expo facilities.

This seminar will review how the land for the Expo venue is being prepared and developed. The planning strategy and present status of the land being used as a newly developed zone will also be discussed.
