Highlights:-
With the global
ever-growing challenges, it is becoming increasing difficult to provide
communities with safe, always-on, affordable and compliant water. Meanwhile, in
recent years, digital revolution becomes an integral part for driving the major
transformation in modern business organisation across every industry, where
artificial intelligence (AI) has undergone a remarkable development. The
International Water Association (IWA) is inspiring the international water
sector to adopt a smarter approach to water management.
Regarding sewage
treatment plants, the plant managers are often faced with the challenge of
making operational decisions and optimizing plant performance without real-time
visibility into plant conditions, or the support of additional staff or
funding. This presents a host of short and long-term risks, including
inefficient energy and chemical consumption, increased operating costs, a
negative impact on community relations, and regulatory compliance penalties
incurred from failing to meet operational targets.
This seminar
discusses how the Real Time Decision Support System (RT-DSS) uses a Sense,
Predict, Act framework to help utilities optimize operations, with a
combination of sensors and weather data, digital twin technology and optimization
algorithms, to simulate the most complex biological and chemical processes
taking place within sewage treatment facilities. This empowers clients to
activate data insights, provides utilities with data-driven suggestions to
drive smarter decisions for optimizing plant performance — without new
infrastructure.
Speaker
Dirk Elsinghorst
Dirk has more
than 13 years of software engineering and computer science experience, holding
a BS degree in Computer Science from Fachhochschule Dortmund - University of
Applied Sciences and Arts in Germany. His experience is entirely in the
water/wastewater industry, supporting Xylem’s development and application of
AI-based optimisation systems for waterworks, wastewater treatment plants, and
biogas production processes, including Xylem’s Treatment System Optimisation
(TSO). This work has included the building of digital twin platforms to
determine optimization strategies. His work has helped more than 40 wastewater
treatment plants reduce energy consumption by up to 30% and he has led the
majority of Xylem’s TSO projects. Dirk has a deep knowledge of state-of-the-art
modelling and optimisation technologies, developing the largest part of the
company’s existing software libraries. Dirk is now the product owner of TSO, who
leads the functional design process and manages the entire development cycle of
TSO.
