Technical Seminar: How the techniques of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can help in product development

Date, time & venue

2019-07-05;18:30-20:00;Chan Yat Mei Sophie Room – 9/F

Jointly Organized by CAD, AMC and EVD

Programme Highlights:

Developing high-performance and cost-effective products in a tough market condition is one of the biggest challenges manufacturers face today. Incorporating innovative strategies in the product development cycle has become inevitable. These strategies include shortening the development time and producing products that possess competitive edge in the market.

Competitive Product Design Manufacturers (PDM) are required to focus more on the preliminary design stages in order to avoid last moment changes that may consume considerable amount of development time and cause delay of product launch to market. This requires the engineers to ensure that the finalized design of the product holds the ability to sustain in the market without failure for a sufficiently long period of time.

Modern product designs require the use of innovative techniques such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) as well as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) that ascertain a better outcome at low costs. This seminar will touch upon most important tools that help manufacturers in improving the product designs to stay ahead in the competition.

Speakers

Eur Ing Dr. C. N. Ko is the CTO of Kam Yuen Group which designs and manufactures wrist watches, industrial automation equipment and solutions, optical connectors, infrastructure for data exchange centres, precision metal parts, environmental friendly metal scrap recycling machine, XYZ liquid handlers and DNA extractors in the laboratory industries.

He holds a B.Sc. (First class Hons, 1980), M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College London. His career spans thirty plus years in design and manufacturing of industrial products and processes related to technology research and development, process re-engineering, and general management.

He is a registered European Engineer (Eur Ing) as well as a Fellow of Hong Kong Institute of Engineers (FHKIE). He has been teaching Design and Manufacturing, Industrial Applications of Finite Element Method and Automotive Product Design at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) from 1996-present. He was the Adjunct Associate Professor in the HKUST from 2016 to 2018.

He has worked in various multinational companies including GEnpact-Asia in Dalian (China) and the Engineering and Research Centre of SKF (Swedish Ball Bearing Company) in the Netherlands. In Europe, he spent 14+ years researching on Business Process Re-engineering (BPR), precision engineering, high-speed Aircraft Bearings, Automotive and Railway Bearings related products.

After returning to Hong Kong in 1995, he has worked in several local factories in the Guangdong province in China as Engineering and Operation directors and also spent some time from 2007 to 2012 as a principal consultant in the Materials Technology Division of HKPC.

He has won several industrial awards on machinery and process designs both in Hong Kong and overseas such as the SKF Business Innovation Award in 1995 and the Kam Yuen Award in 2018 on Pioneering Factory Automation.

Currently, he specializes in industrial application of applied technologies with emphasis on computational mechanics on materials, product and process development in China and Hong Kong.
