Highlight [1st Runner Up of 2017 Environmental Paper Award]
Waste plastic is a major category of
municipal solid waste (MSW) in Hong Kong and presents a significant challenge
in disposal. This study develops an innovative approach to use waste plastic
additives in pavement mixtures containing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP),
which is also a waste material classified as construction waste. The study
results indicated that the samples containing RAP and polyethylene terephthalate
(PET) derived additives provided comparable performance compared to
conventional binders and successfully demonstrated a novel approach to deal
with two local waste recycling difficulties.
