Background
In most big cities, including Hong Kong and
Shenzhen, huge quantities of construction and demolition (C&D) wastes and waste
glass are produced every day representing a large fraction of the total solid
waste stream. Also, increasing quantities of combustion residues including
incineration, coal and steel ashes are generated. The disposal of these wastes has
become a severe social and environmental problem in many parts of the world.
The traditional means of disposing these wastes on land or in landfills are not
sustainable as government sources indicate that there are acute shortages of both
public filling area (reclamation sites) and landfilling space. The possibility
of recycling these wastes is thus of prime importance.
This International Forum will bring together
experts from Europe, UK, US, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong to share their experiences
in turning wastes to sustainable construction resources and how the possible environmental
concerns of recycling these wastes can be addressed.
