Background information

DEADLINE FOR EARLY BIRD: 15 SEPTEMBER 2014

Year 2014 is the 25th Anniversary of the Drainage Services Department (DSD) of the HKSAR Government.  To mark the finale of the 25th anniversary celebration activities, DSD will host the DSD International Conference 2014 (DSDIC 2014) on 12-14 November 2014. The conference venue will be Regal Hongkong Hotel in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.

The main theme of DSDIC is “Sustainable Stormwater and Wastewater Management” with the following sub-themes:

Stormwater Management

Wastewater Management

  • Green Strategies
  • Sustainable Urban Drainage System
  • Climate Change and Flood Risk Management
  • Asset Management
  • Hydraulics and Hydrology
  • Advances in Hydraulics and Water Quality Modelling
  • Nutrient Removal in Wastewater Treatment
  • Micro-pollutant in Wastewater Treatment and Disinfection
  • Odour Management
  • Compact Technology
  • Water Reuse
  • Energy Management

Speakers
Dr James BARNARD
Dr BARNARD is known globally as the ‘Father of BNR’ (biological nutrient removal).  He has spent his career researching, developing and improving processes for treating water and wastewater.  As the key person in BNR, he developed the famous BARDENPHO process and MLE.  He has done process design for more than 100 BNR systems all over the world.  He has consulted internationally for governments and a number of major cities on water management, and more specifically nutrient removal from wastewater.  He is the winner of the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize for 2011.  Dr BARNARD will cover the past, present and future of activated sludge.  His presence is timely to celebrate ‘100 Years of Activated Sludge’ in this year, 2014.

Professor Joseph Hun-wei LEE
Professor LEE is currently the Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.  He is the first Asia based academic to receive the Hunter Rouse Hydraulic Engineering Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (2009).  He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, United Kingdom, and Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences.  He and his research team were bestowed a State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (Second Class) 2010 by the Chinese State Council.  Professor Lee's research revolves around the use of hydraulics to solve environmental problems, in particular the prediction and control of water quality.

Professor Roger A FALCONER
Professor FALCONER is currently the CH2M Hill Professor of Water Management for the School of Engineering, Cardiff University.  He is also the Director of Hydro-environmental Research Centre and the President of International Association of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research.  He has high recognition in the hydraulic and water management field and is a frequent award winner of various international institutions since 1993.  Professor FALCONER's research involves the development, refinement and application of computer models for predicting flow, water quality and sediment and contaminant transport processes in coastal, estuarine and inland waters.

Professor QU Jinhu
Professor QU’s research in water pollution control is top-notched in China. Since 2009, he has been an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering which is the highest academic title in engineering science and technology in China.  He was the former Director of the Research Center for Ecological and Environmental Sciences (RCEES) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China.  His research expertise is mainly in water pollution control, particularly development of the theories, technologies, and engineering applications relating to drinking water quality and safety.  He has achieved numerous innovations in water treatment, water quality risk assessment and water pollution control.
