Programme Highlight
  1. As the implementation of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) charging scheme in Hong Kong approaches, there is a renewed effort to minimize the generation of MSW to reduce our landfill burden.  Ongoing efforts to reduce usage such as banning single use products in various venues are necessary but not sufficient.  Many of these entrenched products simply cannot be totally eliminated.  Recycling can return some of these wastes back to raw materials, but the overall recycling level in Hong Kong is low due to poor profitability for the industry as a whole.  The ideal scenario of 100% circular economy is impossible to achieve; there will always be wastes going to landfills.

  2. In this Seminar, we will describe our two pronged technical approach to tackle this issue.  Firstly, we will present recycling technologies to turn different MSWs into high value products to provide financial incentives for recycling, with our industrial partners sharing their experience in recycling technology development with NAMI. Then, we will describe novel approaches to develop cost effective new generation biodegradable materials and also to introduce biodegradability to conventional plastics to ease the landfill burden.  High value recycled products and biodegradable product prototypes will also be exhibited in the Seminar.
